Just because you CAN do something doesn’t mean you should. Schumer may come to regret this decision sooner rather than later.
Not only does Schumer’s decision to shut down the Mayorkas Impeachment case discredit their ‘defenders of democracy’ argument and put their entire party squarely in support of Biden’s Broken Border, but it sets a precedent.
Unless an already fractured GOP caucus (historically known as the Stupid Party) can band their slim majority together and pressure the Democrats (historically: the Evil Party) either to hold the impeachment hearing they so desperately want to avoid, or at least finish the wall and enforce immigration law… this move by Schumer to simply dismiss charges they don’t want to talk about sets up a precedent whose result they won’t want to live with.
This is the party that has already impeached Trump twice. There is a pretty good possibility he wins again this year. The Senate map favors the GOP this time around, with more Dems in danger than Republicans, and the House could go either way… and will have another vote in the midterms.
If the GOP wins the White House and the Senate, the Dems have two cracks at winning the House. If Jefferies gets the gavel at any point in a Trump term, you KNOW the very first order of business will be to impeach him… again.
The impeachment was hot garbage the first time around. The second time around, articles against him included glaring factual errors or outright lies. The specific accusation of the second impeachment hangs on bogus details of a phone call with Georgia’s elections oversight.
Here’s a WaPo correction that came months after the fact.
On Jan. 9, The Post reported that then-President Donald Trump, in a call with Georgia’s lead elections investigator, Frances Watson, had instructed her to “find the fraud.” He mentioned that she could become a “national hero,” reported the newspaper.
In both cases, the quotes were wrong, as The Post has acknowledged in a correction to the story. “Trump did not tell the investigator to ‘find the fraud’ or say she would be ‘a national hero’ if she did so. Instead, Trump urged the investigator to scrutinize ballots in Fulton County, Ga., asserting she would find ‘dishonesty’ there. He also told her that she had ‘the most important job in the country right now,’” reads the correction, in part.
And here’s a quote from a ClashDaily story published BEFORE Pelosi & Co. moved to impeach Trump a second time.
The WAPO claimed that in his talk with Raffensperger, Trump “repeatedly urged him to alter the outcome of the presidential vote in the state.” The WAPO lied. When you read the full transcript below what becomes obvious is that Trump was not asking Raffensberger to cheat or commit voter fraud. The President made his case that there was voter fraud in Georgia The transcript/full audio shows Trump demanding an honest accounting of the ballots, which he says would give him more than 11,000 votes. Trump laid out numerous examples of double voting, dead people voting, and other ballot irregularities and anomalies…He went over each of the claims of miscounting and voter fraud in Georgia and asked the Secretary of State to explain why he didn’t believe them to be legitimate–that’s it. The Washington Post was simply trying to slime President Trump. In fact, one of the last things the president says to Raffensberger was “And Brad. We just want the truth. It’s simple.”
Yet again, the full transcript and words spoken in their proper context leads to the vindication of a Trump phone call that political bad actors tried to twist against him.
That sets us up for yet another impeachment battle in the future… one that Schumer himself just gave us the tools to shut down as illegitimate.
Imagine a possible future where Jeffries triumphantly brings articles of impeachment against then-POTUS47, Donald J Trump, only to be met with the following response:
Whereas President Trump was illegally spied on by political operatives both before his campaign and during his Presidency, whereas the FBI conducted an investigation based on ideas they knew to be unsubstantiated, whereas not one, but TWO impeachment proceedings have been brought forward by Democrats hellbent on removing Trump from office — as per an explicit and detailed plan in a document Dem operatives put in writing before Obama handed him the keys to the Oval Office, and…
Whereas the Biden administration continued that pattern of abuse of power by harassing his opponent with endless legal battles…
The GOP Senate deems these articles of impeachment to be unserious and politically motivated, with our moral obligation being to be dismiss them with prejudice.
Until yesterday, such a response would have been unthinkable.
Now, because Schumer would rather shield Mayorkas and the Biden Border policy from legal scrutiny, he’s opened the door open wide for GOP to use the same tactic when THEY want to use impeachment to accomplish a political agenda.
