Newly elected Arkansas GOP Gov. Sarah Huckabee Sanders has issued an Executive Order to ban the use of the fake word “Latinx” in state government, calling the word “Ethnically insensitive.”
Sanders noted in her order that the Spanish language is infused with gender terms.
“One can no more easily remove gender from Spanish and other romance languages than one can remove vowels and verbs from English,” Sanders’ order states.
The newly released “Executive Order to Respect the Latino Community by Eliminating Culturally Insensitive Words from Official Use in Government” document states that “Ethnically insensitive and pejorative language has no place in official government documents or government employee titles,” adding that “The government has a responsibility to respect its citizens and use ethnically appropriate language, particularly when referring to ethnic minorities.”
Sanders also cites a Pew Research poll that found that only a tiny three percent of Hispanics use the work term “Latinx.”
“The Real Academia Española, the Madrid-based institution which governs the Spanish language, has officially rejected the use of ‘x’ as an alternative to ‘o’ and ‘a’ in Spanish,” Sanders’ executive order added.
“One can no more easily remove gender from Spanish and other romance languages than one can remove vowels and verbs from English,” the executive order adds. “It is the policy of the Governor’s administration to prohibit the use of culturally insensitive words for official state government business.”
The order then rules that use of the word be discontinued in government documents.
Sanders was sworn into office on Jan. 10 as the state’s 47th gov. and also becomes the first woman to take that office.
