Hollywood has been shocked by having two faith-based films in the top ten biggest movies at the box office as April opens this year.
The latest entry in the top five is Bible-based epic, His Only Son which has raked in more than $5.5 million even though it is in fewer than half the theaters of the big Hollywood blockbusters, including Dungeons & Dragons, John Wick 4, Scream VI, and Shazam.
His Only Son debuted in a mere 1,920 theaters compared to the more than 3,500 to 4,000 theaters of the aforementioned Hollywood fare.
Starring Nicolas Mouawad, the film follows the Biblical saga of Abraham who was asked by God to sacrifice his son, Issac, on mount Moriah to prove his love of God.
“We announced Angel Studios is officially in the theatrical game just two weeks ago when we appointed Brandon Purdie as our head of theatrical distribution, so we’re thrilled to have upset the box office with our first offering, which also happens to be the very first time in motion picture history that the P&A for a theatrical release was crowdfunded. Theaters are selling out across the country,” said Jared Geesey, Angel Studios’ senior vice president of Global Distribution.
His Only Son is only the latest faith-based film to top the box office charts this month.
In the tenth spot of the top ten is Jesus Revolution, another film that has stunned Hollywood by earning more than $50 million since its Feb. 17 release. And, again, this film is in far fewer theaters (in this case 2,575) than the big Hollywood fare, and yet it is keeping pace financially.
The movie is based on Pastor Greg Laurie’s book, “Jesus Revolution,” which outlines “the true story of the national spiritual awakening in the early 1970s and its origins within a community of teenage hippies in Southern California.”
Jesus Revolution stars Kelsey Grammer and Jonathan Roumie.
One would think Hollywood might learn a lesson here.
But, they probably won’t.
